USC’s School of Cinematic Arts new Expanded Animation Research + Practice MFA program (XA) offers a creative environment for advanced artists to explore a broad spectrum of animation techniques and genres, critical theory, and animation history and contemporary practice. The XA program welcomes visionary artists from all corners of the world who are passionate about the art form, strive for excellence and share a commitment to significantly expand the field of animation–whether in the arts, academia, sciences, or entertainment industry.
The program’s goal is to nurture 21st century animation professionals, leaders, and visionaries by encouraging students to explore and innovate new approaches to animation production and presentation. The XA curriculum is designed to prompt expanded practices, to tease out new perspectives, new voices, and new ways of storytelling. Our XA faculty and alumnx advisory board are international and intersectional, many of whom identify in the LGBTQ+, Latinx, Black, Asian, disabled, feminist communities. The XA program is committed to animation research and practice through the lens of race, ability, gender, sex, class, ethnicity, and culture.
XA is seeking applicants for an open-rank adjunct faculty position to teach a Master Class in composing color and light for story. A focus on theory and practice with comprehensive knowledge in painting with light and composing layout for real time production, 3D animation and 2D digital animation is essential. Professional practice in independent and feature animation storytelling utilizing lighting, cinematography and color techniques is also essential. Minimum Education: BA or BFA from an accredited university or art school
Minimum Experience: 5 years teaching at university level
Preferred Education: MFA
Preferred Experience: 15 years teaching at university level.
USC reserves the “Adjunct” appointment for faculty teaching less than full-time at USC, who are employed full-time in a primary profession or career elsewhere. Adjunct faculty typically teach only one course per year but, in exceptional cases, may teach one course per semester, if approved by the dean.
The core salary range for this position is $30 – $45 per hour. This is an adjunct 25% FTE position.
