JOB SUMMARY
Assists in the development, implementation, evaluation and revision of the medical student simulation curriculum throughout Years I-IV at Keck School of Medicine. Reports directly to the Associate Dean for Simulation Education and collaborates closely with the Associate Dean for Curriculum at KSOM. Responsible for direct teaching of procedural skills, the coordination of skills related activities and the alignment of skills related activities with the overall competency based school-wide curriculum. Works closely with the Deans of Simulation and Curriculum to ensure that all medical student simulation needs are being met.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or a health related field and/or
Physician Assistant Certification
Minimum Field of Expertise:
Current and valid California State RN/PA-C License
Certificate in Basic Life Support
Preferred Education:
Master’s Degree in nursing, education or a health related field.
Certificate from a BRN approved nurse practitioner program
Certificate from a PA-C approved physician assistant program
JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
Teaching:
Provide direct teaching for select skills lab sessions (i.e. suture lab, procedural skills labs, student interest group labs, ICM Focused experiences) Serves as key resource for simulation program related schedules, activities and assignments. Assist faculty members to develop and coordinate various skills sessions and workshops. Meet with medical students individually and provide formative feedback on skills performance. Respond to specific deficiencies in the area of skill development.Implement remediation of basic clinical skills as needed.
Curriculum Development
Works closely with the Deans of Simulation and Curriculum to determine the most effective ways to integrate simulation into the longitudinal curriculum. Assists with the development of the goals, objectives, syllabi and other course materials for student simulation courses. Performs needs assessments with medical students to determine gaps in simulation curriculum as needed. Stays current with national simulation guidelines and suggests courses/revisions as necessary. Contributes to the development of information systems and platforms to enhance student performance and evaluation. Assists with the evaluation of teaching and learning effectiveness for skills acquisition. Creates evaluation summaries for skills sessions and provides faculty and residents with a summary of evaluation data.
Administrative
Interfaces as needed with clerkship directors, system chairs, faculty, residents, staff and Dean’s Office regarding medical student simulation curriculum. Responds to specific problems or difficulties in the area of medical student clinical skills deficiencies.Communicates with students, faculty, residents and staff regarding students’ skills performance. Is available to give tours and information about the simulation programs at USC to medical student applicants. Gathers, organizes and summarizes skills data as requested by Deans and faculty. Attends curriculum committee meetings as assigned (Year I/II and III/IV Curriculum Committees). Researches and identifies new simulation technology as it relates to the medical student curriculum.Meets with industry partners to review new market simulators and/or partial task trainers. Oversees medical student equipment supply and inventory. Initiates supply orders for medical student courses and obtains approval for request. Performs annual inventory of all equipment, upgrades and supplies. Assists with ACS Accreditation Site visit preparation and tour.
Professional Development
Participate in ongoing simulation research studies within the curriculum including data collection, proposal preparation and data entry. Establish and maintain appropriate professional network.Maintains currency with professional/regulatory organizations.
