The city of Los Angeles boasts endless attractions and tourist destinations. Amongst all of the sights and sounds, the USC Hotel offers a modern and convenient place to unwind, with 240 spacious, comfortable guest rooms and over 15,000 square feet of flexible event space. Owned and operated by the University of Southern California, and the site of a recent multi-million dollar renovation, the hotel features luxurious fabrics and artwork depicting the storied traditions of USC. Additional renovations, which include the restaurants and kitchens, are in the planning stage.

We are seeking a Director of Housekeeping to join our rapidly growing team.

The Opportunity:

Are you an expert in Housing and University residential life? Do you take pride in your ability to lead a sizeable team, create innovative living environments, and make diverse groups feel at home? Then this is the job for you! As our Director, you will oversee the operations of the Housekeeping and Laundry Department while ensuring the hotel’s service concepts are in line with the proper policies and procedures. You will be communicating daily assignments and special requests and inspecting rooms for VIP arrivals. The Director of Housekeeping will also develop, track, and coordinate a rotating deep cleaning schedule while working with the maintenance department on preventive maintenance projects. You will uphold excellent guest satisfaction scores by continuously reinforcing a Trojans Serving Trojans service culture. We are constantly striving to be the best we can be for our guests, and we need you to be just as passionate and driven!

The Accountabilities:

  • Ensures that guest needs are met by staff in a timely, professional manner. Coordinates with other departments as needed to provide customers with the highest, most rapid level of service possible. Resolves difficult customer problems. Develops and implements policies and procedures to improve the operations of the department. Ensures 100% guest satisfaction and maintains a friendly, and helpful demeanor.

  • Directly or indirectly supervises department employees and/or student workers, to assure that standards are met, the staff is supported, and guest needs remain top priority. Performs recruitment, screening, hiring, orientation and training of department staff. Evaluates employee performance and provides guidance and feedback. Counsels, disciplines or terminates employees. Resolves problems referred by subordinate supervisors or staff. Oversees processing of time cards and delivery to payroll.

  • Participates in planning and administration of department budget. Provides projections and reports at least monthly for development and administration of budget. Monitors expense and labor costs to meet budget guidelines. Administers the maintenance of accurate records. Assures department financial goals are met.

  • Establishes detailed cleaning and preventive maintenance programs to sustain and prolong the life of all furniture, fixtures, and equipment. Works closely with the Chief Engineer to schedule and prioritize repairs. Ensures hotel surroundings and property is maintained through the oversight of preventative maintenance, deep cleaning projects, and frequent inspections that meet high-level standards. 

  • Oversees the hotel’s Green Seal certification. Responsible for ensuring environmental goals are met. Develops and enforces green policies and initiatives that emphasize the proper use of environmental resources with a focus on University initiatives.

  • Manages the laundry department operations, ensures the highest level of washing standards, develops new methods for increasing laundry efficiency, and schedules routine maintenance of the equipment. Manages supplier relationships and maintains costs within budget. Performs monthly linen, and housekeeping supplies inventories.

  • Participates in the Manager on Duty program, Quality Performance Reviews, and the Emergency Response Team. Works with USC Environmental Health and Safety to ensure good safety practices. Develops and maintains the Housekeeping Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Program (MIPP) in accordance with Cal OSHA regulations.

  • Maintains a thorough understanding of all departmental and University policies and procedures as well as applicable government and industry standards and ensures adherence to them.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

The Qualifiers:

  • Minimum Education: Associate’s Degree. Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

  • Minimum Experience: Five years of hotel managerial experience. Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

  • Minimum Field of Expertise: Four years of housekeeping manager experience

  • In addition, the successful candidate must also demonstrate, through ideas, words and actions, a strong commitment to USC’s Unifying Values of integrity, excellence, diversity, equity and inclusion, well-being, open communication and accountability

What We Prefer:

  • Education: Related Undergraduate Study

  • Experience: Five years in a four or five-star hotel

  • Field of Expertise: USC experience in related field

Additional Information:

This position requires you to work weekends, evenings and holidays. Strong reading and writing abilities are utilized often when completing paperwork and management reports, interpreting results, giving and receiving instructions, and training. Communication skills are utilized a significant amount of time when interacting with others; demonstrated ability to interact with customers, employees and third parties that reflects highly on the Hotel and the University.

The annual base salary range for this position is $86,870.99 – $95,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
