The School of Communication at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism seeks a Clinical Faculty / Faculty of Professional Practice to support teaching and scholarship at the intersection of economics and media. The past two decades have witnessed a radical transformation in the business models of media industries that have reshaped how content is made, distributed and monetized. This candidate will help infuse an understanding of economics into the graduate and undergraduate curriculum and will help students understand the massive changes in media through the lens of business and economics.
We are particularly interested in scholars whose work is critically oriented toward current and future transformations in media industries, and how these industries and their futures impact and interface with historically under-served groups. Significant stand-alone teaching experience is required. Supervision of teaching assistants is an advantage. Teaching load is six courses per academic year, plus School/University service.
The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Communication, Media Studies, or related disciplines, however, this position is also open to those with significant professional experience in the media industries who hold an MBA or graduate degrees in Economics or Communication.
The candidate will build a rich network within media industries in order to help inform the development of our multidisciplinary curriculum, lead collaborations between students and industry partners, and become a thought leader throughout USC’s academic and professional communities. The candidate will demonstrate excellence, knowledge and foresight in attending to the increasing needs for diversity and equity in media industries. This excellence should encompass dedication to help recruiting diverse voices in faculty and student populations and advocating for social justice, equal opportunity, and equitable representation throughout the communication field.
We anticipate the candidate will contribute to our industry-related master’s programs and communication undergraduate program. This is designated as a Clinical faculty / Faculty of Professional Practice position, eligible for renewals and promotions. It is not a tenure-track position.
About the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism
The USC Annenberg School was established in 1971 with a gift from US Ambassador Walter Annenberg. It has grown over time to include programs in both Journalism and Communication, and now houses several important centers and initiatives (https://annenberg.usc.edu/research). The School has a long history of collaborating with other academic units and with off-campus agencies. Noteworthy are our ties not only to other social sciences and neuroscience, but to the entertainment industry (e.g., via the Norman Lear Center), and to Technology and Games programs in Cinema and Engineering and the Medical School. Interdisciplinary work is highly valued and expected. The School recently expanded to include a second, modern 85,000-square-foot building providing more space for public events, student work groups, and student-faculty meetings. The School has a combined undergraduate and graduate enrollment of 2,200.

The annual base salary range for this position is $93,000-$162,000 depending on expertise and experience.
