Professor of Clinical Medical Education – (Los Angeles, California, United States)

The Keck School of Medicine of USC (KSOM) seeks applications for an Associate Dean for Curriculum who is an educational leader and scholar with demonstrated success in the administration of medical education curricula. The KSOM Associate Dean for Curriculum will ensure that the medical education curriculum aligns with the educational program objectives of KSOM and meets accreditation standards. They will provide leadership for all aspects of the medical education curriculum and collaborate with the evaluation and assessment units to ensure achievement of desired outcomes. They will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education in all aspects of their work and supervise the  Assistant Dean for Curriculum and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Curriculum to deliver the curriculum in accordance with best practices. The Associate Dean will have an appointment in the Department of Medical Education with an academic rank commensurate with qualifications. We are seeking a candidate at the rank of associate or full professor.  

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Provide leadership and guidance for all aspects of the medical education curriculum

  • Provide supervision and work with the Assistant Dean for Curriculum and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Curriculum, who are charged with delivering the curriculum
  • Collaborate closely with the faculty and the evaluation and assessment units to provide a cohesive experience for students (ensure curricular, assessment, and evaluation programs are aligned)
  • Ensure the goals of the curriculum are being achieved, including compliance with accreditation standards
  • Fuel curricular advancement and innovation through robust learner assessment and program evaluation
  • Collaborates with and provides administrative support to the Medical Education Curriculum Committee (MECC).
  • Works with key stakeholders to develop learning objectives and strategies for accomplishing educational program objectives as well as helps monitor the achievement of those objectives.
  • With the assistant dean for clinical curriculum, oversees all affiliated clinical sites to ensure effective delivery of the curriculum, comparability of educational experiences across all sites and maintenance of appropriate learning environments.
  • Works with key stakeholders in the design, development, and continued improvement of an integrated learning management system.
  • Fosters diversity and inclusion in curricular materials and supports inter-professionalism.
  • Seeks out or develops innovative approaches to curriculum design and delivery staying  abreast of medical education trends and best practices.

Creates communication mechanisms, designs accountability structures, and empowers faculty and staff to ensure educational excellence

  • Collaborates effectively with other members of the Medical Education Leadership Team
  • Models exemplary professionalism and effective leadership
  • Promotes a positive work/learning environment
  • Contributes to building strong relationships with stakeholders and constituents

Work with educational scholars in the Department of Medical Education to help promote educational scholarship endeavors by advancing and empowering educators

  • Help provide consultation and assistance with educational research design, instrument design, data collection, and analysis
  • Help provide direction and mentorship support to faculty members for curricular innovations, other scholarly education projects, and scholarly disseminations
  • Help position the faculty to translate educational theory, apply evidence to the learning environment, and lead educational innovations
  • Help support increasing faculty engagement with the larger regional, national, and international community of medical education scholars and researchers

Advance medical education through engagement in educational scholarship and research

  • Conduct educational research and contribute to the empirical and conceptual literature in health professions education
  • Leverage and collaborate with existing community of scholars and potential partners to build a community and program of educational research

Performs other related responsibilities as required.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or PhD or EdD in a health sciences or closely related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 or more years of progressively responsible experience in medical education and/or teaching in a medical school or academic health setting.
  • Demonstrated success in curriculum administration at a LCME accredited medical school or academic health setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of medical education trends and best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience interacting with LCME or other educational accrediting bodies.
  • Experience leading professionals in a complex organization.
  • Experience at rank of Associate Professor or higher at an accredited higher education institution.
