RN Clinical Educator – Ambulatory Nursing Admin – Full Time 8 Hour Days (Exempt) (Non-Union) – (Los Angeles, California, United States)

The clinical educator is responsible for the development, coordination, delivery and/or evaluation of training and educational activities with a focus on patient care staff. Education will be accomplished in the clinical as well as classroom environment. The clinical educator serves as a consultant and resource for staff caring for patients as well as ancillary department staff. Utilizing appropriate education frameworks, the clinical educator assesses and determines learning needs, implements education programs, and evaluates education outcomes

Utilizing appropriate education frameworks, the clinical educator assesses and determines learning needs, implements education programs, and evaluates education outcomes.

Essential Duties:

  • Training and Education Coordination Manages logistic activities before, during and after the education event. Responsible for creating an environment in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings that facilitates staff learning and the achievement of desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes. Responsible for helping staff develop and integrate the values and behaviors expected of those that fulfill that role. Utilizes a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate staff learning in classroom, lab or clinical settings, as well as in all domains of learning. Recognizes that the clinical educator role is multidimensional and that ongoing commitment to develop, maintain competence in the role is essential. Acknowledges that scholarship is an integral component of the educator role, and that teaching itself is a scholarly activity. Maintains current knowledge regarding the educational environment. Recognizes how political, institutional, social and economic forces impact the educator role.
  • Adult Learning Recognizes how adults acquire and use knowledge, skills, and attitudes by designing learning events that are highly interactive and engaging to the learner with a focus on relating concepts and theories to actual practice.
  • Strategic Planning Functions as a change agent and leader to create a preferred future for healthcare education and clinical practice Establishes system(s) for learning events to ensure that they meet the established goals and objectives. Uses available education resources (Subject Matter Experts, Regional Education Managers, approved standardized education, developed tools and templates) to develop and deliver education efficiently. Develops patient care plans, incorporating evidenced-based research and national standards; consults with and serves as a resource to ensure quality patient care.
  • Learning Assessment and Curriculum Building Responsible for formulating program outcomes and designing curricula that reflect contemporary health care trends and prepare individuals to function effectively in the health care environment. Confers with others to identify learning needs and suggests or selects most appropriate learning solution for addressing those needs. Maintains a frequent presence in the clinical setting to identify learning needs. Designs learning events consistent with the business needs of the organization. Facilitates and supports learning opportunities for individuals or groups incorporating a variety of delivery methods. Recognizes “teachable moments” and intervenes with appropriate learning opportunity either in the classroom or the clinical setting Employs audio and visual aids to help communicate course content. Listens to participants and effectively responds to questions and objections. Utilizes and demonstrates skills/knowledge to provide educational programs for employees who render care to patients and families appropriate to their age, cultural background, disease process, spiritual and psychosocial needs such as geriatric and/or adolescent specific educational programs Provides orientation and/or assists in the coordination of student clinical experience
  • Evaluation Assesses education events to determine participant’s reactions, knowledge acquisition, and application of lessons learned to the job. Conducts audits to establish data informing compliance as needed. Reports data to applicable committee bodies. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Resource Management Uses computer-based data system and other on-line resources to manage information needed to develop curriculum or to provide standard or on demand reports related to any aspect of pain management education at the hospital Responsible for actively participating as a member of USC CARE and Ambulatory Services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Req 3 years 3 years acute care nursing experience with at least f 2 years formal or informal experience in an educator role
  • Req Thorough knowledge and understanding of protocol, procedures, and standards within area of nursing expertise.
  • Req Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Req Ability to assess educational needs and design and develop responsible curricula.
  • Req Working knowledge of the use of established care models in the development of education programs.
  • Req Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care programs.
  • Req Demonstrated ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.
  • Req Demonstrated ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Req Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Req Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word as well as Internet access and utilization.
  • Req Ability to participate in and utilize research for improvement of patient-care practices.
  • Req Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Master’s degree Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field, or in progress, strongly preferred * Master’s Degree in Nursing may be in lieu-of Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Pref Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Registered Nurse – RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing)
  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $133,120.00 – $219,648.00.
